Overwatch is a team-based hero shooter game set in a near-future Earth. Developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment in 2016, Overwatch is free to play and available on Windows, PS4, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. The game has relatively low minimum system requirements and runs on most modern PCs. In the game, players are put into two teams of six and must face off while securing (or defending) objectives across the map. Win conditions and rulesets vary, depending on the game mode. The main game modes can be played as competitive or quick play. Quick play is accessible from the get-go, while competitive – where you battle other players for a rank – only unlocks once you hit level 25. The main appeal of Overwatch is its diverse and vast roster of playable characters, known as heroes. Each hero has its own unique set of skills, weaponry, and personality. Heroes are split into different roles based on their playstyle, with the main ones being tank, damage, and support. Tanks soak up the damage, supports heal or buff allies, and damage heroes go on the offense, dishing out hard-hitting attacks. Games are fast-paced and typically last between 10 to 20 minutes.
Overwatch attracted 7 million players within the first week of release, and was the most watched 2016 release on the streaming site Twitch. By 2019, Overwatch had hit more than 50 million registered users and had a monthly player count around 5 million. Praised for its accessibility and diverse hero pool, Overwatch has received several awards and nominations since its inception, including The Game Award for Game of the Year and the BAFTA Games Award for Evolving Game.
In 2018, the professional esports scene kicked off in full force, with the inaugural season of the game’s global esports league, the Overwatch League. With this change implemented we also opened up this tag where we cover the latest Overwatch news. The grand final was broadcasted across Twitch, Disney XD and ESPN, and had a viewership of 10.8 million. The total prize pool of the first season was $3.5 million, with the winning team being awarded $1 million. Today, Overwatch has established itself as one of the best esports games in the world. It still maintains an active playerbase, with new heroes, balancing changes, events, and other in-game content keeping players obsessed.
