LoL is a free-to-play MOBA developed and published by Riot Games. It was released in 2009 and is available on Microsoft Windows and MacOS. There are various game modes, but the most popular and prevalent in the esports scene is Summoner’s Rift, which pits two teams of five players against one another. Each team has their own base to defend, with the main goal of the game being to infiltrate and destroy the opposing team’s base first. To achieve this, players must fight one another, take down structures called turrets, and secure gamechanging objectives. There are five playable roles – jungle, support, mid, ADC, and top – and over 150 characters, known as champions, to choose between. Every champion has a unique kit, playstyle, and appearance. The roles correspond to a specific lane (or area) in the map and matches typically last between 20 to 30 minutes. League of Legends has two ranked modes: Solo/Duo, where players either play solo or team up with a duo partner, and Flex, which allows you to play with up to five premades.
League of Legends is renowned for its complexity, but that hasn’t stopped it from becoming one of the biggest esports games of all time. League of Legends has more than 150 million registered players, and in April 2021 was the second most-watched game on the streaming platform Twitch. Back in 2019, the game was drawing up to 8 million concurrent players per day. Its success has led to several spin-off games, from Legends of Runeterra to Teamfight Tactics, and even an award-winning Netflix series adaptation.
Millions of people across the world have tuned in to League of Legends regional and international esports tournaments. The World Championship is by far the biggest Riot Games-hosted event, where professional teams from across the world compete for a multi-million dollar prize pool and the Summoner’s Cup. The 2019 World Championship final was watched by 99.6 million people across the world, making it one of the most-watched sport events in history, all covered under this latest news tag. In late 2021, the Olympic Committee of Asia (OCA) announced that League of Legends would be included as an official medal event for the first time in the 2022 Asian Games.
