Smite is a third-person MOBA developed by Hi-Rez Studios in 2014. The game is available free-to-play on Microsoft Windows, Xbox One, PlayStation 4, and was later released to Nintendo Switch on February 18th, 2019. The game is played in third-person viewpoint – which gives it a more immersive, action feel compared to other MOBAs – and in every match players choose a mythological figure to play as. Each figure has its own unique strategies, weapons, powers, and class. In the main game mode, “Conquest,” players are assigned into two teams of five, and must battle it out across an extensive three-lane map. Both teams have a base. The three lanes connect the bases together, and between the lanes is a jungle area packed with monsters that provide buffs or other in-game advantages if killed. Lanes are protected by defensive structures – towers and phoenixes – that attack enemy units and each base also has phoenixes and a “titan.” The goal of the game is to take down all the enemy structures in at least one lane, reach the opposing team’s base, then kill the titan within it. Other game modes include joust, clash, siege, and assault. Main game modes can be played as casual or competitive.
Since its release, Smite has established itself as one of the most popular MOBAs, hailed for its unique third-person viewpoint, diverse range of game modes, and accessibility. Smite hit 4 million players within a few months, and by 2015 had reached over 10 million players. As of 2020, Smite had amassed a playerbase of more than 40 million. Smite has also had much success in esports, and today is one of the best esports games of all time. The first Smite World Championship was held at the start of 2015 and featured top teams from all across the world, with a colossal $2.6 million prize pool. Since then, the tournament has been held annually with a million-dollar prize cap. Other minor tournaments are held throughout the year. In 2016, Smite was awarded the AMD Esports Audience Award at the 2016 video game BAFTAs.
