Dota 2 is a multiplayer online battle arena (MOBA) developed and published by Valve. The free-to-play game was released in 2013 and is available on Microsoft Windows, macOS, and Linux. Dota 2 was designed as a sequel to Defense of the Ancients (DotA), a Warcraft III: Reign of Chaos MOBA mod. In the game, players are assigned into two teams of five, with each team having a base to defend on the map. The first team to take control over the opposing team’s base and destroy its Ancient – the large, glowing structure – wins. To do this, players must battle it out, take down enemy towers, and gather items and experience to make themselves stronger. The map is divided into three different lanes and a jungle area. Before a match starts, players pick a character, known as a “hero,” to play as. Heroes have their own unique attributes, appearance, and abilities. There are also five different positions in the game: offlane, mid lane, carry, roamer, and hard support. Certain heroes are better suited to particular roles than others, and every role has different goals in the game. Dota 2 has several game modes which become unlocked as you increase your player level.
Despite its complexity and steep learning curve, Dota 2 became the most played game by concurrent players on Steam soon after its release, setting a peak of 297,010 players in March 2013. Then, in 2016, Dota 2 broke Steam records again when it hit more than 1.29 million concurrent players. As of February 2021, Dota 2 had approximately 7.6 million monthly active players, and with all that player base, Dota 2 has even established itself as one of the most popular esports games in the world.
Valve has hosted several Dota 2 esports events, at both international and regional levels, and has gone on to offer some of the highest prize pools in esports history. In 2019, The International tournament series had a total prize pool of more than $34 million and a peak viewership of 1.9 million during the finals. Dota 2 has also appeared in major multi-sport events, like the Southeast Asian Games. With all of that in mind, it’s no wonder that we’re covering the latest Dota 2 news under this tag, so buckle up and enjoy the content!
