Valorant is a first-person tactical shooter game developed by Riot Games and available on Microsoft Windows. The game is set in a near distant future, where players assume the role of characters called “Agents.” In the standard game mode, players are put into two teams of five. One team takes on the role of “attackers” and the other team becomes “defenders.” Attackers must plant a bomb device called the spike at a bomb site, while the defenders must prevent the attackers from planting the bomb, or diffuse it in time if the attackers manage to reach the bomb site. A match is won when a team accomplishes their objective or eliminates the other team entirely. The game is split into rounds, and the first team to win 13 rounds wins the game. Players also get given money (creds) at the start of each round, which they can then use to buy weapons and abilities to assist them in battle. There are several playable Agents within the game, each having their own unique ultimate ability and set of skills. Agents are also split into four roles based on their playstyle: Controllers, Duelists, Initiators, and Sentinels.
Hotly anticipated, Valorant’s closed beta launch broke records when it attracted 1.7 million concurrent viewers on Twitch, with 34 million hours watched in a single day. The beta was played by approximately 3 million players daily. As of June 2021, Valorant had an estimated monthly player count of 14 million. Valorant has continued to maintain an active playerbase and has also become one of the biggest esports games in the world, with the first Valorant Champions Tour (VCT) established in 2021. The VCT is an annual tournament circuit consisting of several qualifiers throughout the year and a world championship. The 2021 VCT prize pool was $1 million in total, with Ascend taking the top spot. The grand final garnered nearly 1.1 million peak viewers across all platforms. Valorant has been nominated for several awards since its inception, including The Game Awards for Best Multiplayer Game and Esports Game of the Year, which is also the reason we opened up a dedicated news tag to cover the latest happenings from the scene.
