Tekken is a fighting video game franchise developed and published by Bandai Namco Studios. The series began in 1994, and the games are available on multiple platforms, including Android, PlayStation, Windows, iOS, Game Boy Advance, and Xbox. Tekken follows a standard fighting game format. You choose one of many playable characters, each having their own unique playstyle, abilities, and attacks, then duel it out against another player in hand-to-hand combat. The first player to knock out (destroy their opponent’s health bar) wins the match. The winner is decided over a series of rounds. The gameplay controls remain the same in virtually every Tekken game. There are four main attack buttons, with each controlling a different limb of the character. Pressing multiple buttons together, or in special combinations, generates different blocks, escapes, throws, combos and special moves. Every edition of Tekken adds more complexity and depth to the fighting system, whether through new characters or new ways to fight and interact with the environment. The main installments in the franchise are part of the same plot line, which revolves around the King of Iron First Tournament and Mishima family.
Hailed as one of the greatest fighting video game series in history, Tekken has amassed a huge and loyal playerbase. Since its release, the franchise has sold over 53.5 million units, and has been credited with innovating the fighting game genre. The franchise’s popularity has led to several spin-off games and adaptations, including animated series, live-action movies, and comics. It even has its own museum, which showcases memorabilia, statues, and artwork from the Tekken games.
Despite being more than two decades old, Tekken has maintained a prominent presence in the esports scene, including our news tag. Several Tekken esports tournaments have been held throughout the years, where players can battle it out and compete for prestige and prize money, including The Tekken World Tour and Tekken Online Challenge. The 2019 Tekken World Tour final was held in Bangkok and had a total prize pool of $250,000. Tekken games have also been a part of the Evolution Champion Series (EVO), an annual esports event that exclusively centers around fighting games. Tekken 7 was even featured at the 2019 Southeast Asian Games as an official medal event. Today, Tekken is considered one of the most popular esports games of all time.
