Rainbow 6 Siege is a first-person shooter game centered around teamwork and strategy. Developed in 2015 by Ubisoft, Rainbow 6 Siege is available to play on PlayStation, Xbox, and Microsoft Windows. The game offers both single player and multiplayer modes, though is most renowned for its PvP gameplay. Two teams of five go up against each other to secure or defend objectives, like defusing bombs, securing key locations, or rescuing hostages. Those that keep objectives safe are known as “defenders,” while those responsible for breaching and securing objectives are known as “attackers.” A match is won once a team successfully completes their objective.
Players play as “operators.” There are several different operators in Rainbow 6 Siege to choose from, each with their own playstyle, weapons and gadgets. When a match begins, both attackers and defenders choose a spawn site on the map to start at. Players are then given time to prepare for the match, whether by establishing defenses or scouting and setting up traps. Environmental destruction is a core part of the gameplay, where players can break structures to create new pathways or catch out opponents. Players can earn renown as they play, which they can then use to buy new weapons, attachments, cosmetics, and operators.
Despite weak initial sales, Rainbow 6 Siege has steadily grown in popularity over the years, and is now one of the most-played tactical shooter games in the world. By December 2020, Rainbow 6 Siege had over 70 million registered players. Then in March 2021, Rainbow 6 Siege hit an all-time peak of 199,830 concurrent players on Steam. The game has been nominated for several awards, including The Game Awards for Best Ongoing Game and the BAFTA Games Award for Best Multiplayer Game. Rainbow 6 Siege regularly receives DLCs and new content to keep players hooked. A spin-off game, Rainbow 6 Extraction, was released in 2022. Rainbow 6 Siege has also become one of the most popular esports games, thanks to the game’s competitive nature, high skill cap, and loyal fanbase that keeps this news tag running. The first ever Six Invitational was held in Montreal, Canada, and took place in 2017 with a prize pool of $100,000. Tournaments attract viewership numbers in the thousands, with the 2018 Six Invitational amassing over 321,000 viewers on Twitch. The Six Invitational 2020 had a huge 3 million dollar prize pool total.
