PUBG is a multiplayer battle royale shooter game developed by PUBG Studios in 2017. The game is available to play on Windows, Xbox One, and PlayStation. A free-to-play mobile version was released in 2018, and a version that supports the cloud gaming service Stadia came out two years later. The main PUBG game was also made free-to-play in January 2022. Gameplay follows the standard, battle royale format. Players can choose to play solo, duo, or in a squad. Up to 100 players are dropped from parachutes into a map, where they must then battle it out and compete for resources to be the last player or team standing. Lootable resources include weapons, gear, and first aid supplies. Over time, the map’s “safe zone” shrinks and forces players closer together. Players caught outside the safe zone take damage and are eventually killed. There are several different types of weapons in PUBG, from grenades and guns, to melee weapons such as crowbars and pans. Random locations are bombed sporadically throughout the game. Players can choose to play the game in first-person perspective or third-person perspective. A typical match lasts up to 30 minutes.
Since its release, PUBG has sold over 75 million copies across its platforms, with the mobile version hitting 1 billion downloads in just over two years. The main game had a peak concurrent player count of 3.24 million back in January 2018. As of December 2019, PUBG had an average monthly player count on Steam of more than 308,000. PUBG has been well-received by critics, and is credited with popularizing the battle royale genre. It has amassed several awards and nominations, including Game of the Year’s Best Multiplayer Game and the Golden Joystick Award for PC Game of the Year.
