FIFA is a football video game series developed and published by Electronic Arts. The games are available on a broad range of platforms, including PlayStation, Nintendo Switch, Windows, Android, macOS, Xbox, and Stadia. FIFA is also available on the cloud gaming service Stadia. The first FIFA game was released on 15th December 1993 to the Sega Mega Drive/Genesis console. New games in the series are released annually, with each version introducing new content, mechanics, or game modes.
Gameplay simulates real-life football matches, allowing players to play as actual footballers and control their moves, from defending and dribbling, to passing and tackling. There are several unlockable footballers in the game, each categorized based on rating and rarity. Footballers can be acquired by accomplishing objectives, winning matches, or buying packs. The most popular game mode in FIFA is Ultimate Team, where players can assemble and manage their own club, then compete in online or offline matches to earn rewards that improve their club’s standing. The mode was first introduced in FIFA 09. In Ultimate Team’s Division Rivals, players face off against other players for prestige, better rewards, and a chance to qualify for the FUT Championship weekend. Other game modes include Career mode, Volta Football, and Pro Clubs.
The first FIFA game exceeded Electronic Art’s expectations back in 1993, selling over 500,000 units within the first few weeks of its release. By 2000, the FIFA series had sold over 16 million copies. Then, a decade later, the total number of units sold had surpassed 100 million. As of 2021, more than 325 million copies have been sold across the world, making FIFA the best-selling sports video game franchise in history. Over the years, FIFA’s popularity and competitive nature has also led it to become one of the most popular esports games. There have been several major FIFA tournaments since the series’ inception, including the FIFAe World Cup, FIFAe Nations Cup, and FIFA Global Series, and here we cover most, if not all of them through our latest news section.
