Hearthstone is an online cross-platform card game developed and published by Blizzard Entertainment in 2014. The game is based on World of Warcraft lore and is available on Windows, macOS, iOS, and Android. Hearthstone features 1vs1 turn-based gameplay, where players each take turns to play cards from their hand that can summon minions, powerful spells, or weapons to aid them in battle. Some cards have special conditions and effects. Before a game starts, players must choose to fight as a particular hero. Heroes have 30 health points, and the goal of the game is to use your cards and other abilities to defeat the enemy hero’s health bar first. Each hero gives the player a unique power and different special cards to play with (based on class). You can hold up to 10 cards in your hand at any given moment, and players draw a new card from their deck each turn. You can customize your own deck of cards or use pre-assembled basic decks. Hearthstone has several game modes, including the main Hearthstone game, missions, arena, and tavern brawl. New card sets are added regularly, and cards can be gained from buying packs or crafting them.
Since its release, Hearthstone has become one of the most popular turn-based digital card games in the world, hailed by critics and players alike for its versatile battle modes, polished visuals, and intuitive gameplay. Hearthstone achieved over 20 million registered players within the first few months, and by late 2018 the game had gained a playerbase of 100 million. As of 2020, Hearthstone had more than 23.5 million active players. Hearthstone has won and been nominated for several awards, including The Game Award for Best Mobile/Handheld Game. Thanks to the game’s accessibility and competitive nature, Hearthstone has seen great success as an esports, and is now considered to be one of the best esports games of all time. The Hearthstone World Championship occurs annually, with players having to compete in various tournaments to have a shot at qualifying.
