Fortnite is a free-to-play multiplayer battle royale game developed and published by Epic Games. Released in 2017, the game supports cross-platform play and is available on Windows, Android, PlayStation, and Xbox. It was later released to Nintendo Switch in 2018. The main game mode pits up to 100 players – either solo, in a duo or squad – from around the globe against each other in a battle royale setup, with the last player or group standing being the winner. At the start of a match, players drop from a flying “battle bus” onto an island, where they must then scavenge weapons, items, and other resources that’ll help them stay alive and take down opponents. The map’s “safe zone” shrinks in size as the match progresses, forcing the last remaining players to confront one another. Stepping outside of the safe zone causes the player to take damage and die within seconds. One of the most unique aspects of Fortnite’s gameplay is the construction system. Players can gather materials to build structures like fences, stairs, campfires, and floors. Other game modes include Creative, Save the World, and Party Royale. Players can purchase several skins in the game to change up their character’s look.
Fortnite’s Battle Royale hit 10 million players within just two weeks of its release. By June 2018, Fortnite had reached more than 125 million registered users and became a cultural phenomenon, with celebrities, athletes and people across the world copying its in-game emotes. Famous artists, such as Travis Scott, have even held virtual concerts inside the game. Travis Scott’s 2020 “Astronomical” concert was attended by more than 27.7 million unique players and watched over 45 million times. Today, Fortnite has maintained an active playerbase, drawing in millions of players monthly.
Thanks to its huge and loyal fanbase, Fortnite has also established itself as one of the biggest esports games in the world, which is also the reason we are covering the latest Fortnite news on our site. Epic Games has hosted several major tournaments for Fortnite, including the annual Fortnite Champion Series (FNCS) and Fortnite World Cup. The 2019 Fortnite World Cup had a peak viewership of 2.3 million across YouTube and Twitch and a $30 million prize pool, making it one of the largest esports events in history. Epic Games have also established the FNCS Community Cup series, which offers all players, no matter their skill level, a way to be involved in the competitive scene.
