Apex Legends is an award-winning battle-royale shooter game that takes place in the Titanfall universe. Developed by Respawn Environment and published by Electronic Arts in 2019, Apex Legends is free-to-play on various platforms, including Microsoft Windows, PlayStation, Xbox One, and Nintendo Switch. Cross-platform play is supported, and a touchscreen-compatible mobile version of the game was released in 2022, available on both iOS and Android.

 

Apex Legends is a fast-paced game, with the average match lasting under 20 minutes. The battle map (or safe zone) shrinks as the game progresses, forcing players to confront one another. Like most battle royale games, the last team standing is declared the winner. The other main game mode, “Arenas,” pits three-player squads against each other in a deathmatch over several rounds. New in-game content, including limited-time events, is released regularly.

 

Despite having a surprise launch with virtually no commercial marketing, Apex Legends attracted over 1 million players within the first 8 hours of its release, 25 million players in the first week, and 50 million players by the end of the month. The following year, Apex Legends had racked up an estimated player count of around 100 million. The game received overwhelmingly positive critical acclaim and was awarded The Game Award for Best Multiplayer Game in 2019. Apex Legends was quickly recognized for its potential as an esports, with several esports organizations establishing professional teams within the first few months. The Apex Legends Global Series (ALGS), a tournament consisting of several qualifiers throughout the year and a world championship, was launched at the start of 2020 with a multimillion-dollar prize pool.
