Starcraft 2 is a real-time strategy game developed by Blizzard Entertainment in 2010. Starcraft 2 is available on Microsoft Windows and macOS and was made free-to-play in 2017. Gameplay revolves around intergalactic warfare and features both single player and multiplayer modes. In the main competitive game mode, “Versus,” players are pitted against one another, with each having a base, army (made up of units), and structures to defend. The objective of the game is to eliminate all the enemy’s structures before they can destroy yours. Players must gather and harvest limited resources, which they can then use to increase the size of their army and build even more powerful structures and units. There are several different maps to play on, with new maps being introduced to the game regularly. Maps rotate each season and are covered by a fog of war. The fog of war hides your opponent’s movements and can only be revealed with your army’s presence or friendly structures. There are three playable races to choose from: Terran, Zerg, and Protoss. Each race has their own unique units, features, and playstyle.
Starcraft 2 is one of the fastest-selling strategy games in history, with over 1 million units sold within 24 hours of its release. By the end of the first month, Starcraft 2 had sold a total of 3 million copies. As of December 2010, Starcraft had sold almost 4.5 million copies across the world. The game received overwhelmingly positive critical acclaim and has been nominated for several awards, including the VGX Award for Best PC Game and BAFTA Games Award for Best Strategy Game. In 2016, Starcraft was featured in the Time’s Best 50 Video Games of All Time list.
Despite being over a decade old, Starcraft 2 has maintained its popularity, and has even become a global esports game, just like its predecessor. There have been several major tournaments over the years, including the World Championship Series, Global Starcraft 2 League, and ESL Pro Tour. Tournaments are renowned for having large prize pools, and Starcraft 2 once held the title of the best paying and most viewed esports game in the world. Starcraft 2 even helped Twitch evolve and prosper into what it is today. As of 2022, the game remains one of the most popular esports games of all time, which is also the reason we started up this tag where we cover the latest news from the SC community!
