Rocket League is a fast-paced car soccer game developed and published by Psyonix. It was released in 2015 and is available on PlayStation 4, Xbox One, Nintendo Switch, Windows, macOS, and Linux. Rocket League was made free-to-play in late 2020 and cross platform play is supported. Gameplay is essentially soccer with rocket-powered vehicles. Players are assigned into two teams and are thrown into an arena, where they must then use their rocket vehicles to maneuver a giant ball into the opposing team’s goal. Matches last for around five minutes and the team with the most goals wins, but a “sudden death” overtime is added if the game finishes in a tie.
Rocket League is renowned for its complex yet insanely fun mechanics. Players can dodge, jump, fly, and even flip their vehicles. There are various in-game controls to master, from boosts that can speed you up, to an air roll button that’ll let you maneuver your car while in the air. Matches can be played in casual or competitive mode, and there are plenty of fun variations of the standard game to explore, including Rumble, which adds in unique power-ups, and Hoops, which turns the arena into a basketball field. A player’s vehicle can be modified and customized to their liking.
Rocket League is a sequel to the 2009 title Supersonic Acrobatic Rocket-Powered Battle-Cars. While its predecessor received mixed reviews, Rocket League has had overwhelming positive reception since its release. In the first week, the game amassed over 120,000 concurrent players on Windows and PlayStation 4, and has gone on to receive several industry awards, including the Best Independent Game and Best Sport/Racing Game at the 2015 Games Awards. By 2018, the game had a playerbase of approximately 40 million.
Despite its age, Rocket League has maintained its popularity, likely due to its regular updates, transition to a free-to-play game in 2020, and move into esports. The Rocket League Championship series (RLCS) takes place annually, and pits international pro teams against one another. Teams must prove themselves through various qualifiers and tournaments in their respective regions. The 2021-2022 prize pool totaled $6 million. Today, the game is one of the top esports games in the world, which is also the reason why we’re having a dedicated Rocket League news tag just for them.
