Counter-Strike: Global Offensive (CS: GO) is a strategy-based first-person shooter game developed by Valve and Hidden Path Entertainment. Released in 2012, CS: GO is the fourth game in the Counter-Strike franchise and is available on multiple platforms, including Windows, macOS, Linux, PlayStation, and Xbox. CS: GO was made free-to-play in December 2018. In the main competitive game mode, players are put into two teams, Terrorists and Counter Terrorists, and compete across a series of rounds, where they must carry out objectives while trying to eliminate the opposing team. Objectives include the likes of planting bombs, diffusing bombs, and rescuing hostages. The first team to win 16 rounds wins the match. At the start of each round, players can purchase weapons, armor, or equipment with gold earned from previous rounds. Gold is awarded to players when they complete an objective or gain a kill. There are several other different game modes in CS: GO, including Deathmatch, Arms Race, Demolition, Wingman, and Flying Scoutsman. A battle royale mode, “Death Zone” was released in 2018. In this, up to 18 players battle it out to be the last one standing and must scavenge various resources across the map to survive.
In 2020, CS: GO had 24 million monthly active users and broke Steam records when it hit a peak of 1.3 million concurrent players. Then, by the end of 2021, CS: GO ranked among the top ten most-watched games on Twitch, with over 725 million hours watched.
