PlayStation 5 Error Code Troubleshooting Guide

PS5 Error Codes

The PlayStation 5 is currently one of the best consoles on the market out there, hands down. One look at its specifications and it’s easy to see why – Sony’s response to Xbox’s Series X is capable of running the latest AAA titles in 4k@60FPS without a sweat. The advanced features of the PS5, including the new DualSense controller that comes with haptic-feedback adaptive triggers and a renewed design, have only engraved the console’s success in the coming years.

That being said, no matter how good a console is, users are bound to run into error codes from time to time and the PS5 is no exception. The console has inherited the same structure for troubleshooting codes as the PS4 which means that most of the errors we will talk about will involve similar solutions in order to resolve the issues, just different numbers and nature.

This error code “structure” isn’t something new, it has been around for decades and started off with the PSP, which we covered in this article: PlayStation Portable Troubleshooting.

Regardless, it can be annoying to run into a PS5 error code and go scrambling around the internet in search of what the error code means and how to resolve it. The experience can be exhausting and that’s why we are here with a PlayStation 5 error code troubleshooting guide that lists (and resolves) most of the PS5 error codes out there. If you are a new PS5 owner and want to insure you get to play your console as much as possible, this troubleshooting guide should be in your bookmarks.

Before we begin with the specifics though, let’s look at some basic measures we can take to resolve most of the error codes on the PS5.

The First Steps Towards Troubleshooting your PS5

It’s always a good idea to run through a few basic fixes that can help you resolve many of your PS error codes before you start digging specific details on how to fix them. These simple steps are –

  1. If your console isn’t turning on properly, check the power and HDMI cables. The most major issues often have the simplest causes, and if your PS5 isn’t turning on, your cables might be the culprit. Check the power cable once to see if it’s damaged anywhere. A simple cut can make it completely dysfunctional and you would have to get a new power cable from a store. But if your power cable is completely fine, then we recommend checking if your HDMI cable is working and connected properly – especially if your PS powers but doesn’t give a display signal. HDMI cables with loose connections are notorious for causing display issues.
  2. If your console is freezing and not responding, do a power cycle. If you have already tried restarting your console to no avail, the next best solution you can try is a power cycle – which is just an advanced version of a normal restart.
    1. To do a power cycle – Power off your console, remove the power cable and let your console discharge properly for at least 20-30 minutes. When you are done waiting, reconnect the power cable and see if it fixes the issue.
  3. For a simple solution that fixes most software problems, try entering safe mode and restarting your console. To enter safe mode, first make sure that your console is powered off completely and isn’t running. Press and hold the power button till you start hearing beeps and on the second beep, release it. Get your controller, make sure it’s connected and simply enter the PS safe mode by pressing the PS button on your controller. In the Safe Mode, select ‘Restart PS5’ which is usually the first option in the menu.
  4. If your PS5 turns on but you can’t control it, check your controller’s batteries. This might sound silly but many people, especially the ones who are getting a PS5 for the first time, forget to charge their controller’s batteries and keep wondering what’s wrong with their consoles. If you can’t control anything on your PS5, make sure your controller is charged properly. On the other hand, if your controller still doesn’t work even if you charge it for hours on end, there is a big chance that your battery has gone bad and you need to replace it.
  5. If you’re facing compatibility or software issues and your console is outdated, update your firmware to the latest version. Sony values their customer base a lot. That’s why they keep introducing patches and updates to the PS5 in order to optimize its performance and fix any bugs/glitches that you may encounter. If you haven’t already, you should update your PS5 to the latest version as soon as possible to fix any compatibility, software or even hardware issues you might be encountering. There are two ways you can do this –
    1. Update through settings – Go in your Settings by selecting the gear-shaped icon in the top right corner. Find and select System, then System Software and then select System Software Update and Settings from the menu. If an update is available, you will see it in the Update System Software section. Select the update and the console will download and install the update for you.
    2. Update through safe-mode – If you are unable to access your settings or update your PS5 for any reason, you can also download and install the update manually using an USB drive. Simply download and create a folder named “PS5” on a USB drive formatted with a FAT32 format. In the PS5 folder, create another folder called “UPDATE”. Download the update file from the PlayStation’s official website and save it in the UPDATE folder as “PS5UPDATE.PUP”. Once you are all done, plug in the USB drive in your console and start the console in safe mode. We just talked about how to enter safe mode – simply hold the power button until you hear the second beep. You will enter safe mode and get a variety of options to choose from including restarting your console or resetting it completely. The only option you need is No.3 – Update System Software. In the next menu, select Update from USB Storage Device and click Okay. Your PS5 will start the update process.

PlayStation 5 Networking Related Error Codes

Unlike its predecessors who could work just fine without an active internet connection, the PS5 heavily relies on the internet to both run and download games. This is acutely relevant when you have the digital edition PS5 – you will need a fast internet connection to play any games you want since they would all be digitally downloaded.

And even if you were to cash in $100 more, the normal PS5 with the Bluray Drive also ‘essentially’ runs on the internet with modern titles like Modern Warfare coming with only 72 MB of data on their game discs with the expectation that you will download the rest of the 117 GB online.

Point is, if you plan on playing on the PS5 you are going to need a stable and fast internet connection. To ensure this connection doesn’t get disrupted with annoying errors, we are here to help you out with solutions for all the major networking related error codes on the PS5, starting off with CE-112069-9.

PlayStation 5 Hardware Related Error Codes

Since the PS5 mostly works online, it doesn’t run into hardware issues as much as its older counterparts such as the PS3 – especially if you opt for the digital edition that comes without the Blu-ray disk drive. For the errors that do occur, our simple solutions are here to resolve them, starting off with CE-110538-8 –

PS5 Error Code CE-110538-8

  • Severity: Moderate to Severe
  • Problem Category: Hardware

CE-110538-8 Error Explained: This error code indicates a problem with the Blu-ray disc inserted in the console.

How to solve CE-110538-8: Check the disc you’re having problems with for fingerprints or scratches. If that’s not the problem, try another disc to ensure that the problem isn’t related to the console itself. Another common cause for this error is incorrectly inserting the disc – the cover should face the PS5’s opposite side-plate.

If the issue persists: You can try cleaning the Blu-ray lens to see if it helps but we highly recommend that you contact PlayStation Support before doing so as it can void your warranty depending on which country you live in. Alternatively, you can simply send it to a repair shop or Sony itself to fix your disc-reading drive.

PS5 Error Code CE-108360-8

CE-108360-8 Error Explained: This error code indicates a failure regarding the camera’s connection to the console.

How to solve CE-108360-8: If you’re using a PS Camera, check that the dedicated PS5 adapter is working correctly and verify that its settings are correct. Additionally, you should try using the camera in a brightly-lit room and reviewing its position. Alternatively, try another camera on your PS5 to check if the problem is related to your console.

If the issue persists: You should contact PlayStation Support if no device seems to work.

PS5 Error Code CE-100005-6

  • Severity: Moderate to Severe
  • Problem Category: Hardware

CE-100005-6 Error Explained: This error code indicates that the console couldn’t correctly read the disc inserted.

How to solve CE-100005-6: Try cleaning the disc with a piece of cloth to get rid of any fingerprints or smudges. If the error remains, turn off the PS5, unplug it, and plug it back in again to ensure a clean reset. Alternatively, use another compatible disc to check whether or not the problem is related to a specific disc or the system’s hardware.

If the issue persists: Contact PlayStation Support, as there’s likely a problem with your disc-reading drive.

PlayStation 5 General Related Error Codes

Apart from the major hardware and software errors, the PS5 has a lot of general errors that mostly deal with your account’s incorrect information and failure to launch games. While relatively easy to resolve, you need to follow detailed steps in order to fix these errors as quickly as possible and this section will help you do exactly that.

PS5 Error Code WS-116332-6

  • Severity: Moderate
  • Problem Category: Miscellaneous

WS-116332-6 Error Explained: This error code indicates that access to the PlayStation Network is unavailable or prohibited due to a violation of the terms of service.

How to solve WS-116332-6: If you haven’t violated the terms, try checking the game developer’s server and the PSN Status page to see if there are any issues. The network may be suffering from congestion, so you should wait and try again later. If there are no issues, make sure your PS5 is connected to the Internet.

If the issue persists: Your account may have been suspended. Check your email to see if Sony has notified you. In case of a temporary ban or suspension, you won’t have access to the PSN services until it ends and you need to simply wait for a while before you can start playing games again. However, in case of a permanent ban, there is virtually nothing you can do since permanent bans are (as the name suggests) irreversible and cannot be taken back. Still, it doesn’t hurt contacting PlayStation Support to ask for a plea.

PS5 Error Code WS-116329-2

  • Severity: Moderate
  • Problem Category: Miscellaneous

WS-116329-2 Error Explained: This error code indicates that your PSN sign-in ID or password doesn’t match.

How to solve WS-116329-2: Make sure the information you entered is correct. Go to Account configuration in Settings and try again. You may also try to sign in from another device to see if it’s a server-side problem.

If the issue persists: If you still can’t log in from your console, contact PlayStation Support.

PS5 Error Code CE-107649-7

  • Severity: Minor
  • Problem Category: Miscellaneous

CE-107649-7 Error Explained: This error code indicates that the disc inserted in the PS5 differs from the installed data.

How to solve CE-107649-7: The most common cause for this error is having a disc that includes a DLC or similar extra data. Try deleting the game and its related data, as these additional features may not be installed on your PS5. Then, install it directly from the disc.

If the issue persists: Contact PlayStation Support, as the problem can be specific to your console, and they may be able to fix it.

PS5 Error Code NP-102942-8

  • Severity: Minor
  • Problem Category: Miscellaneous

NP-102942-8 Error Explained: This error code indicates you cannot use an application due to age restrictions.

How to solve NP-102942-8: You should verify if your date of birth matches the age requirement for this application. You can do this by signing into Sony’s website and adjusting your age. While you may freely change it, keep in mind that this information will be necessary should you ever need to reset your password, so make sure you use your actual date of birth before hitting “Save.” Alternatively, the problem may root from your console’s parental settings. Head to Settings > Family and Parental Controls and remove the parental restriction. Remember to re-enable them when you are done with your gaming session so that your children don’t get their hands on an R-rated game.

PS5 Error Code NP-102955-2

  • Severity: Minor to Moderate
  • Problem Category: Miscellaneous

NP-102955-2 Error Explained: This error code indicates an inconsistency with your account information.

How to solve NP-102955-2: First, head to Settings > Users and Accounts > Accounts on your console to ensure your email address and password are correct. If the information is accurate, do not attempt to log in repeatedly, as Sony will interpret this as hacking, and they may ban your account temporarily. You can also log into your console via pc through PS Remote Play or by phone using the PlayStation App and scanning the barcode. If your information is correct and the problem roots from a glitch in your PS5, this will allow you to log in successfully.

If the issue persists: We suggest you contact PlayStation Support, as your console might have a problem.

PS5 Error Code WS-117224-7

  • Severity: Moderate
  • Problem Category: Miscellaneous

WS-117224-7 Error Explained: This error code indicates there could be a problem with the 2-step verification of your account.

How to solve WS-117224-7: Your email address may be linked to another service of Sony. Therefore, you need to unlink your sign-in ID and run the 2-step verification one more time. You can do this by going to Settings > Users and Accounts > Account > Security > 2-step Verification and following the instructions.

If the issue persists: Unfortunately, there isn’t much you can do other than contact PlayStation Support as there might be a problem with your console. Make sure you do so urgently – the 2-step verification acts as an additional layer of protection from hackers and not having it enabled can compromise your account’s security.

PS5 Error Code CE-100028-1

  • Severity: Minor
  • Problem Category: Miscellaneous

CE-100028-1 Error Explained: This error code indicates insufficient space on the PS5’s solid-state drive (SSD).

How to solve CE-100028-1: Check the system storage to know how much space you need for what you’re trying to install. Then, delete enough content directly from the PS5’s storage settings or through the home screen. This includes games that you don’t want to play urgently and can install later as well as any downloaded content that you don’t need anymore. Some data, such as PS4 games, can also be stored on an external hard disk drive/SSD to free up the system’s storage.

If the issue persists: Consider getting a NVME M.2 SSD with a larger storage size that comfortably holds all your games, especially if you have the digital edition PS5.
