We have been waiting for the second half of Rick and Morty season four to return for a while now, and that finally happened last night. The iconic show resumed its fifth serialized run on Adult Swim with an episode called Never Ricking Morty. Which managed to break so many fourth walls at once that it even polarized some fans. Primarily for appearing to make fun of parts of the fandom.
Namely, the titular duo spends the entirety of the episode’s duration trying to stop a train powered by passengers telling stories about Rick. The episode toys with its co-creator Dan Harmon’s story circle concept quite a bit, ultimately pushing even the ever-rational Rick into turning to a higher power.
The meta episode prompted a polarizing fan response on social media, though not all of the non-positive reactions were from people being outright mad because they felt mocked.
Others said they were completely at a loss for what was happening on the screen. Which probably isn’t the reaction that the Emmy-awarded show has been aiming for. Regardless, there are four more episode of Rick and Morty season four to go over this year.
So, maybe they introduce some much-needed post-S4E6 clarity, even if they have to resort to blatant exposition.
